Who is, like, SoooCal? - Sweet Tea
Her smile, her presence, as sweet as tea, instantly recognizable by her cherry lips. Originally from Jacksonville, Sweet Tea started doing drag in 2016. With dreams of pop stardom, she rocketed from Florida to the Pink Pony Clubs of West Hollywood and now performs all around LA (including opening for Chappel Roan at the Wiltern). Beyond Drag the Musical hostess, SERV Vodka brand ambassador, and drag mother to Yuviah Rose, Amanduh, and Kesha Mann, Sweet Tea’s position as a staple within the LA scene affords her a unique perspective on SoCal drag.
“The Drag Diversity. So many visions. So many styles. So much representation! Compared to Jacksonville, LA has more than just pageantry (which isn’t bad) but it’s refreshing and out of the box … I love exploring …the city and different scenes, supporting shows from all over, and connecting with drag artists from all areas…Working in LA has made me truly understand what it means to be the life of the party. In Jacksonville, it’s mostly a ‘showgirl’ format for all of our shows…they’re mainly at night too. But here in SoCal, there are a lot of brunches and parties where it’s just hosting. A LOT of Bingos and just sprinkles of ‘showgirl’-like shows….I would love to see the SoCal scene grow by appreciating its talent, possibly with an annual award show. I would love to see more shows where newcomers can flourish. More shows! More drag! And remember, don’t touch the hair,” Sweet Tea said.
